Shelley Cates
With a background in architecture + design, Shelley always wanted to help shape and improve the spaces in which we surround ourselves. But after 10+ years in the field, she felt dissatisfied with her career. At her lowest point - depressed, lost, and sucked into a world of consumerism (but lacking in emotional abundance), Shelley started exploring how to pivot her career choice into something that would fill her cup, rather than deplete it. An opportunity presented itself when her home yoga studio was going to be sold - Shelley and her (very supportive) partner Pablo bought the yoga studio, never looking back. Not quite a pivot - instead a giant leap of faith, Shelley listened to her heart and her head (which were for once in alignment), and with the help of Pablo, BREATHE Cambridge was born. She quickly found a love for not just teaching yoga, but also learning how to move bodies through space, offering people opportunities to slow down, explore, and be curious about their own selves - similar goals she had as a designer, but with a much more enriching outcome.
Since BREATHE’s conception, Shelley has received over 800 hours of teacher training, including Vinyasa(200RYT), Hot26(300RYT), Barkan, Yin, and Yoga Nidra, and is now starting to explore the powers of pranayama (breathwork) and meditation. Shelley has led retreats in Mexico, Belize, and the US. She has co-led a Hot26 teacher training in Cambridge, and is co-leading a 200-hr Vinyasa YTT in April ‘24 in Chile. Shelley currently lives with Pablo and their daughter, Fuego, in Valparaiso, Chile.

This trip may be brief, but it's an adventure with lessons that you will forever carry with you. Book now to reserve a spot.
As you begin your transformative journey in Tulum, Mexico, you'll first find yourself checking into our beautiful eco-resort nestled in the jungle, setting the stage for the adventure ahead. After settling in, the day kicks off with introductions, allowing you to connect with fellow travelers who share your quest for personal progress. In the late afternoon, Erin and Shelley will lead you through a session that begins with breathwork and grounding/centering, allowing you to align your mind and spirit. From here, we will meet in a circle and share our intentions for the trip (don't forget to bring your journal). The day concludes with a warm welcome dinner, and under the open sky, an otherworldly fire circle, connecting you to the ancient spirit of this captivating region.
Awakening on the second day of your journey, Shelley guides you through a serene morning meditation, setting the tone for the day. Following this, she leads a vinyasa yoga session that incorporates sun salutations, an invigorating practice that will connect you with your inner self and the universe, promoting a sense of mindfulness and spiritual alignment. A delicious breakfast refuels you for the adventures ahead. You'll have free time to explore the enchanting surroundings before Erin takes charge with a lively water aerobics session. This workshop does more than just strengthening your body; it also helps demonstrate the importance of mental and spiritual flexibility, showing you how to move like water through life's challenges. After lunch, an enlightening workshop conducted by Shelley adds depth to your journey. The evening reaches its end with a cacao ceremony, a sacred ritual that uses cacao as a heart-opening and grounding tool to facilitate introspection, emotional release, and connection with others.
The dawn of day three begins with a rejuvenating morning meditation and breathwork, courtesy of Shelley, allowing you to step forward with clarity and balance. Erin then leads a dynamic water movement class, harnessing the energy of the nearby waters. After breakfast, an adventure unfolds as you embark on a cenote tour. In Mayan culture, cenotes were considered sacred and served as entrances to the underworld, symbolizing a connection between the physical and spiritual realms. Today, they continue to hold spiritual significance for some, as they represent a link to the ancient wisdom and mysteries of the Mayan civilization. We will spend the afternoon appreciating the mysterious beauty of this swimming hole before enjoying a delightful lunch in this magical setting. The rest of the day is yours to explore or relax as you desire. Dinner draws the group together, setting the stage for another night of spiritual exploration that concludes with restorative yoga.
On the fourth day, Erin leads a serene morning meditation, paving the way for Shelley's invigorating Salutes to the Sun - Vinyasa yoga session. Breakfast offers nourishment for your body and soul, and the day unfolds with free time for your personal explorations. Erin returns for an energizing water aerobics session before lunch. Then, join another workshop with Shelley, learning from her wisdom as she equips you with tools to make further progress towards a holistically fulfilling existence. In the evening, we will gather for a purifying and spiritual experience in the form of a temazcal ceremony. An ancient sweat lodge practice, the intense heat and steam are believed to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit. Sit back, relax, and allow the purification to take place before a sumptuous last dinner. We will close out this final full day with a lively dance, ensuring a memorable end to your adventure.
Your final day in Tulum begins with a soul-nurturing morning meditation and journaling, guided by Shelley. Erin then leads one last water aerobics session, infusing you with vitality. After breakfast, it's time for check-out and a transfer to the airport. Take with you the invaluable lessons and experiences from this powerful journey! Safe travels and be well.
