Kia orana! Welcome to Rarotonga, the beating heart of the Cook Islands. As the largest of the 15 islands that make up the South Pacific nation, Rarotonga is an incredible tropical paradise awash with warm sunshine and brimming with adventure. There is no better place to start your epic island experience. Once you arrive at Rarotonga International Airport, you’ll be whisked away to your self-contained holiday villas at Paradise Holiday Homes, located in the Titikaveka district. Set in lush surroundings, each homely villa is designed with the tropics in mind — think cozy wood furnishings, bright and airy interiors, and a private swimming pool for your enjoyment. After settling in, enjoy the afternoon at your leisure until dinnertime.
Dinner is a wonderful affair that combines a rich and immersive cultural village tour with a superb overwater night show and buffet dinner. Start off with a glass of bubbly (or non-alcoholic drink if preferred) and watch as compelling legends and stories are told and fast hip-shaking dances are performed to the sound of rhythmic drumbeats and song. Coupled with a spectacular setting, this cultural performance and dinner experience is one you will not forget!
This morning, before exploring the island, you’ll have the opportunity to attend a traditional church service at the local Arorangi CICC Church. A wonderful cultural experience in itself, this is your chance to mingle with Cook Island churchgoers and join in with the singing and the joy. Dress code: Please remember to wear respectful clothing to the church. Beachwear is not recommended. Men can wear short-sleeved shirts but no tank tops or singlets, ladies should not show bare shoulders or too much skin. For those wishing to skip this activity to see the surrounding area, feel free to spend the morning discovering the coast or sit down in one of the cafes to enjoy breakfast until the church service is over.
Time to pick up your reserved bicycles! A shuttle will take you to the bike shop and for the rest of the day, spend your time exploring the island at your own leisure. Rarotonga is a laid-back destination with friendly and accommodating people — as you cycle around the island, you’ll feel a sense of freedom everywhere you go. And don’t worry, the main roads are flat and it only takes about two hours (32 kilometers) for you to circle the island. Marvel at the natural beauty of this paradise, from untouched jungle to mountain peaks. Stop by a cafe or restaurant (there are over 100 of them on the island) and indulge in delicious food with a Polynesian twist, or find the best ocean views you ride from beach to beach!
Rise and shine! Today, you’ll hop on a domestic flight to Aitutaki, home to approximately 1,800 people and the world’s most beautiful coral lagoon. Picture dreamy turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and alluring views, This jaw-dropping destination sits 220 kilometers from Rarotonga and delivers a hundred percent more seclusion. A true gem in the South Pacific, this paradise welcomes you with a cruise through the pristine waters of the Aitutaki lagoon. Visit small inlets, snorkel and swim through sparkling waters, and explore a pristine tropical sanctuary so stunning, you’ll be talking about it for days. In between your discovery of Aitutaki, you will also enjoy a scrumptious barbecue lunch while the crew entertains with live music and cultural demonstrations. In the early evening, you’ll return to Rarotonga.
Step away from the coast and head inland for a change of scenery — the terrain you’ll discover is green and inviting as you embark on a unique tour. First, cycle your way through Puaikura, an area rife with trees, wildlife, history, and culture. Then, hop on a truck and discover the historical and cultural sites of the Takitumu district. A picnic lunch break allows you to refuel for the next leg of the tour, which brings you through the scenic inner ring road of Rarotonga, the Ara Metua, which has existed for centuries. Along this road there exists many sacred ancient sites (marae) that have withstood the test of time. Eventually, you will come to Avarua for a walking tour of the town before heading to the incredibly lush Takuvaine Valley, where you will trek through the vegetation and ancient taro patches. In the late afternoon, rejuvenate with a drink at a west coast beach bar. Enjoy a cocktail of your choice and have some nibbles before you are transferred back to your villas to rest.
You are free to spend the rest of the day as you please. As evening descends, we suggest riding your bicycles to the unique Muri Night Markets for a visit. There, you’ll find almost everything: fresh fruit, island music, delightful handicrafts, and much more. Stick around for dinner and try some local dishes!
This morning, the warm and delightful waters of the Muri lagoon await you! Take a ride in a glass bottom boat to the marine reserve, where you’ll get to enjoy a snorkeling session amongst the tropical fish, sea cucumbers, and coral. After a good splash, it’s time for lunch. The rest of the afternoon and evening is yours to spend however you wish — relax on the beach or explore Rarotonga further at your own pace.
There’s nothing like a round of water sports in the morning to wake you up. Keep your balance as you paddle around the island on a stand up paddle board, and have another splashing good time in the water as you snorkel amidst the vast array of marine life that call Rarotonga home. Try to spot clownfish, parrotfish, sweetlips… you might even bump into eels and rays!
